ROMP, the River of Music Party:
The museum launched ROMP in 2004 as an annual 3-day museum-style celebration of all things bluegrass – performances on several stages by dozens of legendary, stellar bands from North American, Europe, and the Far East, plus a Legends Concert, The Bluegrass Masters Film Festival -- a full-fledged film festival featuring world premieres of films this museum has created -- tours, new international Exhibits, workshops, educational forums and lectures, the annual Hall of Honor Unveiling Ceremony and Opening Night Reception, arts and crafts, clogging and square dancing, picnicking, and camping. ROMP is vital to the museum and this region’s national and international reputation. Due to ROMP’s success and the burgeoning popularity of bluegrass music worldwide, the bluegrass museum and its host region are beginning to enjoy “top-of-mind-awareness” with bluegrass fans around the world.
A typical day at ROMP begins at 9 AM each morning with audiences viewing the new exhibits, visiting with the exhibitors, or attending riveting performances on the Museum Stage or Yellow Creek Park. Simultaneously, the film festival, hosted annually by Banks of the Ohio Radio talk show host Fred Bartenstein, is taking place at the museum, more often than not attended by the musicians themselves who are featured in the fims! Create your own personal, remarkable experience -- it's all great. The Main Stage performances at Yellow Creek Park are non-stop up to and including the midnight hour. Camping is free to festival-goers; electric hook-ups are available for a fee.
Yellow Creek Park is a beautiful site, worthy of a trip in its own right. Hiking trails, a fishing lake, playgrounds, indoor restrooms, screened picnic shelters, volleyball, tennis, and frisby golf. Visit the Pioneer Village and the Nature Trails. Plan a visit to nearby Reid's Orchard before you go home! Take a bit of Kentucky's summer harvest home with you in jars - you'll be glad you did.
